Hey girls- just wanted to let you know that formaldehyde is a type of aldehyde.  Aldehyde is the functional group, so when the treatment contains an aldehyde, it my very well be formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen and can be irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. If the treatment contains another type of aldehyde, it likely still has the same negative and irritating effects of formaldehyde. Exposure to small amounts of formaldehyde is common, though; cigarette smoke contains formaldehyde. I just wanted to let you all know, since sometimes companies can try to confuse their costumers with mumbo jumbo!

Hi Wendy,  I want to know how you felt about it a month after treatment, two months?  I had the Brazilian treatment two months ago.  It was definitely nice right after, looking like you after pic, but then after a month, I kind of went back to the frizzy curls.  I can flat iron it with ease, and it comes out nice and straight.  If I wear it natural, it gets a little too frizzy for my liking!  I am going to get it done again, it has been two months.  My hairdresser in Florida said if I got it done sooner, before it started to wash out too much it will be even better the second time.  Just wondering if and when you got yours done a second time, and what your results are.  I have short hair, and am hoping to be able to actually grow it out using this treatment.  It was impossible to grow out before, it just became one large mass of frizz.  Thanks for your info.  You can reply to me at:  mailto:firedragon_6@hotmail.com  Thanks, Mary from Key Largo and Syracuse, NY.

I forgot to ask, and this is to anyone out there - I am having trouble now finding a finishing product!  I used to use Paul Mitchell Creme, and that is not doing what I want anymore.  I want something to hold the curls when I wear it natural, and do like a bit of the wet look.  Any ideas? M

    Right After Coppola Keratin
Hello! My big question is after it wears out of your hair does your hair return to the same exact state as before you ever had the treatment? I like my curls now and dont wanna ruin them! :)

Also, I always it curly, it just looks too damaged for all the time it takes to straighten. Will I still be able to scrunch it and let it air dry with some curl?

Hi, your hair looks fantastic! I have Keratin Action by Dikson on my hair right now. Two more days to go. I'm a bit concerned as the hairdresser actually curled my hair with the flat iron, instead of straightening it. Will this effect the outcome? I'm not supposed to put anything in it so it won't alter the shape, but what about the curls? any help would be really appreciated.

    Shay -
I agree with the salon that this treatment would be perfect for your hair type! and yes it's quite pricey. the keratin leaves the hair gradually so I can't guess exactly how long you will see results. typically it's about 3 months. altho it can stretch from 2-4 months. I've noticed i can get 3-4 months out of an application if it's applied with a heavy hand, however the first 3 or 4 weeks it felt a bit too weighed down. many extend the life of their treatment with the Coppola Keratin product called Infusion Keratin Replenisher ($40). i've had good luck w/ it but over time it will build up in the hair due to the silicone content - so you have to use a sulfate shampoo from time to time. (with curly hair I usually use a sulfate-free shampoo because the sulfates strip the hair of its natural oils, which we curly/frizzy types need!).

i know this is years later haha lol.. I'm looking to do a keretin treatment, not sure which one(if there are different ones) my only problem is, my hair is thin but i have a lot of it, an dmy hair is not curly, it's straight with an awkard wave. I HATE flat hair, I wanna know is it going to make me look foolish with it sticking to my head, or will I be able to get my volume with my blow dryer still? Thank you!

My name is Nadia by the way!

hi nadia! you'll most likely be able to obtain good volume w/ a blow dryer - especially when using the proper techniques of blowing drying the hair up & away from the scalp. but you will notice some flatness compared to what i'm used to. at least I did... I too hate flat hair...

Brazilian Blowout link - this is a cousin of the Coppola Complex treatment...thought you guys would find this link interesting...
    http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Consumer/video/brazilian-blowout-safety-concerns-11774295

Coppola uses another derivative called aldehyde which is safer than formaldehyde - however, I have experienced eye irritation so it makes me wonder. I think the risk is more on the stylist side because they are getting direct, repeated exposure. Either way it's buyer beware!
keratin or not - I hope everyone is having a fun, frizz-free Fall!

I have very fine hair with a soft texture that forms ringlets and is prone to frizz. I love lots of body but prefer a looser curl. My hair is long (mid-back) but shrinks so much due to curl formation. I am looking to loosen and elongate my curls, eliminate frizz, but maintain lots of volume and body. Again, my texture is very fine and I don't want to lose the volume. With the volume it looks like I have a lot of hair...which I like, but if I straighten and flat iron it looks quite thin and flat. I don't want this to happen. What do you think? Will I maintain my volume if I move forward with the treatment? My fear is that the treatment might make my hair look too thin and flat without all that volume that I love.

I'm considering trying this treatment for fun just once but am still wrestling with a couple hesitations:

    1) Demarcation line as hair grows out - mine is fairly short (not even to shoulders) and super thick, frizzy, and puffy (which I don't mind most of the time). The last thing I want is to get caught up in a cycle where I have to have it redone. How marked was it for those of you who've gone through the full cycle or only did it once?

    2) Health risks - this makes me nervous too. From what I've been reading, it isn't as natural as it's being marketed. I'm uneasy about putting something in my hair from the same family as formaldahyde (aldehyde). And though this treatment seems to have countless converts, I seem to be finding too many frequent accounts of hair falling out, breakage, or toxicity (esp. for stylists with prolonged exposure to it). Know much about this?

Oh, and would love to see your hair at diff. stages. I thought it was supposed to straighten curly hair. Thanks!

hi you may already have your answers because i'm tardy in answering - but here are some thoughts:
      1. there's no demarcation - the keratin leaves the hair gradually over time, and any regrowth is not that obvious because it's a defrizzing treatment not a straightening. therefore it's not like the japanese straightening where you have to worry bout a line of demarc.
      2. aldehyde is a cousin of formaldehyde and I wouldn't want prolonged exposure to it either. yes some stylists who frequently perform the treatment have commented about coughing & lung irritation, some salons have had to install air purifying systems which has helped some, however, the stylists are still so close to the product the jury is out on how effective those are.
it's not a straightening treatment, it's a frizz-reducing treatment. however, it does make curly/wavy hair MUCH easier to straighten via blow dryer or flat iron, because you're not fighting the frizz factor!

Hi Wendy, Im seriously considering getting the treatment done as I have fine and VERY curly hair. I have heard though that you shouldn't swim in the ocean afterwards? This may be a problem as I am a surfer...any feedback would be great!

sorry for the late reply you probably already have the answer to your question by now! how did it workout for you? I'm thinking the salt water would definitely breakdown the keratin fairly quickly.

How much did it cost ? And do you still get them ?
      • Wendyruby United States (Private)

it costs around $350 per treatment. I haven't had one in a year but am considering another one now that the humidity is returning. I'm also curious about the new brazilian blowout that i'm hearing good things about - which is a similar process to the coppola except the product is applied by spraying it on. however it only lasts about a month...but costs much less at around $60. it's a good way to see if you're going to like keratin in your hair before you take the pricier plunge.

Hi! I am getting the treatment done this week....I am super excited but also a little nervous. :) What happens when your hair starts growing out? i.e. if you don't get it redone after the first treatment, are your roots super curly/frizzy and the rest of your hair straight?!? Also, I'm worried about the 3 days I can't wash my hair after the treatment- does this mean I can't go to the gym either (i.e. sweat- which may wet the hair)?

Had my hair done on Wed, washing it tommorow after 3 days. Was very pleased with results, but this morning my ends look very frizzy, is this normal?
    • Wendyruby United States (Private)
      2 years 6 months ago
yes, I had the same thing happen. sometimes sleeping can cause the ends to get a bit frizzy during the 72 hour waiting period...

THE SECOND TIME IS EVEN BETTER, I HAVE HAIR TO THE MIDDLE OF MY BACK WHEN WET, BUT DUE TO EXTREME CURLS IT WAS UP TO MY NECK, KERATIN IS FANTASTIC DO IT THE 2ND TIME IS BETTER, PS STAY OUT OF CHLORINE POOLS AND THE OCEAN IT PULLS THE KERATIN RIGHT OUT

Hi there! i am scheduled to have this done on Jan. 1- my question is: while sleeping during that first crucial 72 hour period, did you put your hair up in any way?
    • Wendyruby United States (Private)
      2 years 5 months ago
No, I slept with my hair down, then gently flat ironed pieces that looked 'deformed' from the pillow. It's important not to clip it or put it up in a pony tail during that 72 hours because the hair pattern can become dented. however, I did pin it back for short periods of time (i.e. while washing my face).
      good luck on 1/1!

    hi Wendy, me again!
I just got my Coppola products, but I was reading the ingredients and the shampoo (only the shampoo) has Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate listed at the top of their ingredients. Ingredients are listed in order of amount used, the top has the larges amount and the ones at the bottom, the least. Should I be concerned?
    Thanks, Cristina

hi Cristina - I didn't buy their shampoo because I'm mostly sulfate free. the 2 sulfates you listed are somewhat harsh & I wouldn't use them often. But, after you get a treatment you def need to avoid sodium chloride (found only in shampoos).
sulfates tend to dry out the hair, but the SC will strip the hair of the keratin if used regularly.
