Upon arriving at Gillette's Castle

I never went to Gillette's castle all the years I lived in CT.

a stairway to the outdoors patio

Is the castle in public ownership now?

><><><
Yes, there is a small fee you pay to enter and have to follow their rules while there - such as - when entering no flash is allowed for any photos, if you climb the staircase, you cannot come back down the same stairs - do not touch any of the furniture...

Lovely mellow colour...... would be nice to sit with a book

supposedly his neice's bedroom

I am surprised that he would build such a building, rather than a modern looking structure...... a bit eccentric perhaps?

><><><
The walls have grass woven coverings, the mortar between the stones was stained red, its really ghastley...I would have thought someone with the money he had would have had more beauty in his home. I compared his eccentricity to that of maybe Howard Hughs...

in fact, the entire castle is strange

The pointed stones around the balcony and windows give a very ghostly appearance to the building.

one of the carved doors

What a contrast--all that stone and beautiful woodwork.

><><><
notice the mortar - he had it stained "red"

another view from the riverboat

I've gone to many shows at the Goodspeed Opera House and have eaten at the restaurant across the street. I loved Goodspeed!
