FOR HISTORICAL PHOTOS LIKE ALL THE ONES I GAVE PAT FOR THIS SITE PLUS ALL THE UP TO DATE PHOTOS FROM THE PAST 3 YEARS NOT ON HERE. --------------------------------------------------------
Great photo of a real champion! I met him many times as a little boy/teenager at short-tracks such as Birmingham International Raceway (I saw Davey run his first race there), Pensacola, Mobile and our home track-- Jackson International Speedway.
Hi there Pat, love the site and have for quite a while now. I am a huge fan of the SLM cars from the late 70's through the 80's. Especially anything to do with Jr. Hanley. I am from Windsor and see that you are now back in Windsor also. Wanting to know where you collected all the SLM photos. Did you take them or are they from programs, etc. Just curious as I LOVE to look at them. Do you have any interest in selling any of your old stuff as I am a huge collector of racing from those days. SLM, ASA, ARTGO, TOLEDO, CHECKER FLAG, etc. Pics, programs, magazines, papers, shirts, anything and everything. Would love to hear from you and you can reach me at hanley_72@hotmail.com. Maybe there is a chance, just thought I would ask. THANKS a BUNCH for the site. RON NELSON (hanley_72)

this car is a oldsmobile cutlass not a buick regal
Pat - this one really brings back memories! I was at the Deseronto meet in the mid-60's when this car set the first ever 200+ mph run officially recorded in Canada.

Thanks! I never knew Olympia was the sponsor of that car. ----------------------------------------------
Apparently for that one race.

Any idea who the driver is? ---------------------------------------------
Dale Earnhardt. This car was raced in 1978 at Atlanta. He finished fourth for new owner Rod Osterlund.
By 1987 it was getting hard to tell at first glance what car was what (much like today), as these two 87 Buick LeSabre's could easily be taken for Olds 88's or T-Birds. Within just a few years the use of factory sheet metal for the cars would be a thing of the past.
Smokey's Impala again thanks for posting the picture. I saw it run in the 1966 Daytona 500, Bunkie Blackburn drove it while Mario Andretti drove Smokey's #13 Chevelle-not a good day for either but they sure were beautiful cars and sounded so sweet.

Great to see a picture of this car again! thanks for posting it!
After Harry Hyde sued Jim Stacey for not paying the bills to keep the team going a court Judge ordered the Dodge Magnums (3 of them I think) and spare parts padlocked behind a fence in June 1978. Stacey rented this Chevy and an Olds and hired pit crews on a week by week basis to keep Neil Bonnet (and Ferril Harris for two races) going thru the end of the season. The financial disruptions (and the switch away from the superbly prepared Hyde Dodges) really messed up the rest of Neil's year with only one top-10 finish (after parking the Magnums) to show for his superior talents.
One of the very few times in the 80's when there was more than one Mopar on a race track. In 83 Cecil Gordon campagined this #24 Imperial (a former Negre Bros Mirada re-skinned) in ARCA and in the 8 cup races he managed to qualify for. As Buddy Arrington generally only ran the Dodge Mirada (either in all Blue or this blue/red scheme) on the short/medium tracks I'm guessing that's where this pix is from. Buddy suffered a down season in 83 (after his 1982 7th place in points effort) by finishing in the top 10 only twice. Cecil's best finish in the Imperial was 15th, but only had one DNF in his eight races. After the 83 season he sold the car.
