Looks the Gold Cup at West Capitol to me. I was there, Pombo led most of the race in the peat bros. car but suddenly pulled into the infield directly next to where I was standing. He was pissed...the steering wheel came loose during the race and he threw it out the in disgust! I have lots of SJ Sppedway pics and West Capitol taken from various races during the late 60's and well into the mid-70's. What a great era that was! Larry.
This car is the former Agajanian REV 500 Special #98 that Dick Atkins won the 1966 Golden State 100 USAC National Championship race at Sacramento. The car debuted in 1964 with Parnelli Jones at the wheel with the Offenhauser engine. The Ford DOHC engine was put in the car for the 1971 USAC season.
This photo was taken in practice before the October 25th, 1970 100 Mile U.S. Open Competition race at the (old) California State Fairgrounds at Stockton Blvd & Broadway. Jimmy Gordon, chief mechanic on the car at the time, Leonard Faas, Sr., and car owner, Hayden Harris decided to run the ill-fated race without the wing.
Hi....Photos do not appear on screen. I am on a Mac, so that may be the problem....would very much like to view your photos. I produced the program for the event and had very few midget photos. Assuming I do the program next year, I would be interested in connfering with you about the usage of your photos in the program.
