From the Seeds of Fear

Thanks for the great shot of my art! Originally I planned on an 8' version of a barbed wire tree with some sort of "fear" theme to it, but a daughter's wedding and some unexpected "real life" canceled that! My wife decided to opt out this year and I found myself in the position of going alone. I had decided to go with "no strings or commitments" this year. No art piece to babysit, no one to consider but myself.......A blank page so to speak. A very new experience for me.......This piece is constructed entirely of found items that I picked up enroute to the Playa, from Washington State. I had given up on doing an art piece this year, until I found a pile of old barbed wire at Goose Lake, Oregon. I had some time to kill, so I started weaving..... I figured it would be Gheto Art for my camp at the least, and then headed down the road. As I drove up the highway from Alturas and over the pass to Cedarville, I had the idea pop into my mind: "If I piled some rocks at the base it would look like it was growing!", then almost immediately I thought: "No, what I need is a coyote skull and bones to put around the base, I could call it 'From The Seeds Of Fear'"!! A short distance up the road, I pulled over to let my jeep cool, walked to the edge of the road and looked down... about 20 feet off the road I found the skull, and the bones just sitting in plain view, sun bleached and perfect, oh yes and it was from a coyote! I could have stopped anywhere along this 20 yard long pull out! Chills! I headed down the road and thought: "What I need is a bucket to plant it in". I looked as I drove through Cedarville and Eagleville and then pretty much gave up on the bucket idea..... then, in the middle of nowhere, I saw a bucket, the perfect bucket, upsidedown on a fence post by the road, with a pull out across form it for my jeep and trailer!! As I headed down the road, I started looking for rocks...... believe it or not, I couldn't find any good rocks: Dirt rocks at the pull offs, and the good rocks were where I couldn't stop! At the last bend before dropping down to Gerlach, I stopped for a bite to eat at a pull out and to take in the last bit of solitude before the chaos of the burn began. I walked across the road, looked down and saw these great black rocks - Duh! The Black Rock Desert! As I put the rocks in my trailer, I turned around and there was the perfect piece of weathered wood for the sign! I carved the title and burned it in with a red hot, rusty nail in camp and headed to the Artery for placement! No lighting....... Later that day two campmates arrived from the Bay Area. They had stopped and bought some solar lights on their way, but weren't going to use them. I was welcome to them!
The magic of the playa begins the moment you step out the door! I feel like I was merely an instrument to assemble the pieces into this piece, but it was a much greater and more mysterious hand that wielded the brush!
