Good evening Jack Well done on the model.Presently I'm building both the Maiale and the Barcino, which I believe make a good pair. My problem is the colour of the Maiale.Onthe box art and yours the colour seems to be green but I have a picture downloaded from the Gosport Museum and the colour looks like it is grey.any comments and what exactly is the green colour?
Waiting for your answer Hoping to be able to send you some of my pictures when I finish the project. Good night

Malta -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A very good day tot you, Mario. Thank you for your kind comment!
The Italeri kit of the Maiale includes a nice booklet with historical facts and detail photos plus a colour plate. The contemporary colour photos in the booklet and elsewhere all have that brownish haze over them, typical for photos from that era and of course due to age. I too was wondering if the dark green colour I intended to use wasn't too dark, but I chose for it anyway. Not only for the reason of discolourisation of old photos as mentioned before, but also bearing in mind that seawater rather rapidly attacks the hue of paint, making it dull and greyish. Since I wanted to depict my Maiale as being fairly new I gave it the recommended dark green colour, which in itself seemed to be a non-standard colour and merely slapped on what was at hand in those days. Hence I think you should not be all that precise about the tint of the chosen green. No two colour pictures I have seen in books and on internet are the same regarding the colour. Before the build I visited the local war museum at Overloon (pictures to be found in a seperate album) in the hope to find a Maiale. Instead I found its German counterpart, the Biber (Beaver), which was painted light grey all over. No luck there. So I would suggest to dull down the green when depicting a well-used mini sub (bearing in mind these things weren't used for a long time and were not build in abondance), including dents in the screen, scratches and rust, or depicting a fairly new one with a darker shade of green to your choice. The paint I used was Tamiya's TS 2 Dark Green spray can, decanted in a glass jar to be used with an airbrush.
I hope this helps to get you on the way, Mario. The Barcino (which later was copied by the Japanese but as "kamikaze-attack boat"; they never got the chance to use it ) makes a nice combo indeed. This kit also has a booklet inside its box with historical facts. If compared with photo reference you may notice that the hinging part of the "seat" isn't correct and needs some work. Nothing some reshaping can fix, though.
Was een mooie geweest voor de ROSE-Fotki-contest! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dank je, Jacques.....heb ik niet aan gedacht..

Jack, Nice design on the spray booth! Question on this photo, what's this box for? Filtration? What is contents?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Tim! Filtration of the fumes indeed. It's filled with active carbon chips.
Very good paint job and details. I noticed the model is a 47G version. I make them a little smaller. Try my home page and gallery. More photos due in this weekend.
