I was working in the pits as a race steward, assigned to the Comstock Team and had my trail bike parked at rear of pits. When McLean failed to complete a lap, there was concern as to what happened to him and the only news was that he had crashed....Rathgeb asked me if i would take my bike over to scene of accident and bring back news. Saw that car was on fire but nobody seemed to know if he had escaped.....after much yellin and waving of arms i was able to talk with a corner marshall who told me that McLean never got out and was presumed dead. The trip back to pit's was awful, I drove right thru the pits without stopping, past all the workers and also some of the drivers wives without trying not to show any emotion. Thank goodness, the only person to follow me to the rear was Chuck Rathgeb and i broke the news to him.....he immediately gave orders to bring other GT40 in and retire from race.
