That's not in Kings Canyon National Park. It's on Forest Service land on the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway.
Apparently the current owner has a sign that says photography of the pumps isn't allowed without permission. People take pictures of the pumps anyways, and a few bother to ask.
I appreciate your input. This photo was taken slightly over 11 years ago (April 28, 2001) and I don't recall a sign saying anything about taking pictures of these pumps. If it was there then, I didn't notice it. I didn't check on whether or not it was in the park because, with the name, I was led to think that it was. When I get to the revision of these photos I'll get a map that will keep my information accurate. Thanks! Jim
I believe they are winter hardy - drought may be their worst problem. They are plentiful in the deserts of Nevada, California and Arizona and perhaps other places. Opuntia basilaris. Jim
And so it begins. Now, I have to wonder if I would have judged correctly the scale by the sand grains or if I would have thought it was one of your photos of larger erosion patterns. lol
