Jökulsárlón by Breiðamerkurjökull, glacier, South Iceland. A numer of scenes in films have been shot here: Beowulf and Grendel, Tomb Raider, Die Another Day (James Bond), Batman Begins and A View to a Kill (James Bond). When we were there they were filming the Amazing race 6.
This photo is taken at Kirkjuvæjarklaustur, South Iceland. This natural pawment of basalt is called Kirkjugólf (churchfloor). This is the top of a colomar basalt and looks like a churchfloor. This has a simular orgin to the Giant´s Causeway in Irland. I will edit out my foot. ;-)
Thank you for your nice comment. I will try to fix it slightly like you suggest. But it has allready been in a contest on Fotki. It made the 11. place in Photo of the week March 17-23.
Thank you for your nice comment on this photo. It is taken in Iceland, actualy it is taken from the frontsteps of my home. The mountains name is Esja. The plateau you see is one bed of lava on top of another, not quite horizontanlly. Mount Esja was made from many volcanic eruptions during the Ice Age. First under the ice, tuff-stone and then above the ice, lava. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esja
Thank you for your comment and adwise about the rooftop and the horizon. This photo is taken in early june from a balcony on 6. th floor in Akureyri facing mouth of Eyjafjordur. The sun never went down. It came from behind the mountain on the left side and moved slowly until it dissaperad behind the mountain on the right side. The building you see on the right side is a church.
Thank you for your nice comments. I think it would be ok to climb the mountain, Vémundarstaðahyrna, in this weather, but not in the foggy weather like in the other photo from Olafsfjordur in this album which is taken from the same spot.
Thank you for your comment Alf. Yes, you are right. Here you see the meeting of the two continents, America to the left Europe to the right. This photo is taken in Thingvellir, national park. This rift is called Peningagjá (gjá=rift). The water is very cold coming from underneath. I like your expression, pillow lava, the moss makes the lava look like pillows. Thingvellir is by the way on UNESCO list of World Herritage.

If I left comments on the images in this album, then I'd be here all week! An absolutely astonishing album from begining to end. This image is interesting - classic columnar basalt but from a very different viewpoint. Edit out your foot, though! :-D
