In 1991 & 1992 I was the Troop Commander of 3 Troop, 1 Field Squadron, of the Royal Australian Engineers. At the end of 1991 I had the good fortune and experience to be tasked to construct a foot suspension bridge across the Cox’s River. We built it and while construction was under-way I was thinking of how the bridge could be best named.

3 Troop had only been re-raised in November of 1991. Previously, 3 Troop had served in Vietnam, and had gained honour and infamy as the ‘Tunnel Rats’….the very first men, under the command of ‘Sandy’ MacGregor (the author of ‘No Need for Heroes’)http://www.calm.com.au/pages/02nonee...roesbook.shtml to enter into the tunnels of Cu Chi, to clear them, and engage the Viet Cong underground.

A soldier, Corporal Bob Bowtell, died in a tunnel. He was the first ‘Sapper’, or Royal Australian Engineer, to be killed in Vietnam. I thought it would be fitting for such a beautiful structure as the bridge, to be named and commemorated after Bob. In seeking permission from his family it came to light, and became even more fitting to have it named after Bob Bowtell because, Bob was born and raised in Katoomba.

Bob’s family were very happy to have their husband, and father, recognized in such a way and it was a great honour for his children, assisted by the local Federal Member, to open the bridge in 1992.

Since the opening, I have yet to return to the bridge. I am promising to take my wife and children to go and see it.
