I was a faculty brat - son of Hugo Lutz. We lived on Franklin St. I grew up on the campus, from when I was a small child in 1960 until I moved away in the 80's. I used to deliver the Star Ledger to apartments in this building. I can still remember parking my bicycle in the back on cold winter mornings and entering this building through the boiler room, where it was very hot.

The riots in Newark in 1968 should have given the Upsala administration ample warning that the area was changing very quickly. The school relied heavily on out of staters to foot the bill for dorms and food. Even in the late '60's, there were far too many commuters from New Jersey. The college should have pulled up its roots and moved to New England in the early 70's. No vision.
