Sorry, my name is Darla (I forgot to put my name) :-)
Very many thanks for taking the time to reply in such detail Boris. Thank you also for the links, which I've had a good look at. I guess for now I'll just keep going on with what my little camera can manage to do, whilst understanding how limited it is. At least now I know why the focus is so off so often, and the fact that it doesn't have a viewfinder just a back screen doesn't help ... particularly when I'm not wearing my reading glasses so I can't really see if the pic is in focus or not!! Still, it's a little camera and it goes just about everywhere with me so I guess I'll just make do for now. Thanks again though for taking the time to give me this interesting information. Who knows, maybe one day..... :-)
Long time, no see. My fault, I've not had much time for comput'n.
This is contrasty (Is that a word? lol) enough, but I like it. You know me, Rule of Thirds addict. I'd like the subjet off-center. That aside, your DOF is good, lighting is spot on and the detail in the man's right eye is good. Looks like this might have been a low light event, considering how large his pupil is.
Always happy when you visit Certo! This one was taken at near noon time...horrible (squinting) contrasty original.. I should have dumped this one!...but I had nothing to show for the day... so I took an hour and processed the heck out of it. I`m still lukewarm on this one but whom am I to turn down praise! thank you Certo. boris
You should take on the nickname, TextureMan. Of the several things I really liked about Kenny Rogers' photo album, "Your Friends and Mine" (a book of celebs), he aced the textures. With his money from singing career, he was able to purchase top studio equipment and study under the best portrait photographer in town. Years ago, I spent "endless" hours getting lost in his images. All that to say, while he used feathered lighting techniques, etc., for a man walking his dogs with nothing more (I suppose) than a camera, your work, IMO, competes with the portraits from Kenny Rogers. ...and that's a whopping big compliment. Folks who don't know Rogers' photographic skill could assume he probably just took a crack at it. Almost all his images are B&W and they're better than the few color pics.
Hello Certo I never knew that Kenny Rogers is a Photographer! I checked out a few sites for a couple of hours and "wow" pretty darn good! I like morning or evening light....never took a decent picture near noon time unless it was overcast (my favorite light) Thank you for the "whopping big compliment"! Boris
It seems the only thing he had over you was multiple light sources. Texture exploitation is consistent throughout his images. Your use of a single light source, normally the diffused light of overcast skies, has given me pause time and time again.
Anyway, over the last however long I've been looking at your photos, Boris, I've always been impressed by the textures and textures cannot be exploited if the light is not exploited.
Yes Certo it is all about the quality of the light. And the diffused light of a overcast day is the easiest light for the digital camera to handle...the dynamic range (the steps from dark to light) seems to be expanded under diffused light...hard to make a exposure mistake under diffused light. Boris
Very good, Boris. This is good for my Rule of Thirds addiction, lol. The lad turning to look at something works very well.
I wonder how it would look if the boy's eyes were colored brown, leaving the rest of the image B&W would look. Maybe just a slight hint of brown in the jacket/sweater.
