new 34 tooth sprocket compared to the orig. 40 tooth sprocket and the Orig. 16 tooth small sprocket compared to an 18 tooth sprocket( I won't be useing the 18 tooth)
Since you can't use the 18 tooth how about dropping the rear to a 30 tooth?

I would have considered this engine a basket case.  Much more than the fire problem.  Engine looked abused and really filthy inside.  You had some patience and perseverance to rebuilt this.  I replaced my series I with a II and it thru a rod recently.  Only thing wrong with the early engine is the main roller bearing busted.  Seems like roller bearings are a better bearing system than the sleeves in the series II. Had problems with the valve clearance as I should not have put the gasket in between the cylinder and case.  Also had the wrong size PTO shaft seal which I installed and later had to put the right size in.  Two size shafts on the series II. No gaskest are actually used on the case to the cylinders or end cover although they are supplied in the kit.  Then I used the wrong holes on the engine mounting plate which I suffered to correct that.  Even after all these years, manuals and gaskets are not correct or complete.

Check the PTO shaft size.  Could be 1" or 1 1/8".  Gasket kit may only have the 1 1/8"  size so install the correct one if wrong.

That is an amazing amount of very good work. I am a collector of WheelHorse machines and I am doing a restore on a 75 D-160. It was essentially a parts machine when I started. It has taken a month of 8 hr days just for the mechanical portion.    Two things that caught my eye on yours...the fender pan is out of shape...bent down on both sides, the right brake pedal is bent and thats an easy fix...the Tires are just too big and look...awkward...23x10.5 AG's would look better. I love tose threaded inserts you used...never seen them but they sure are much better than those little metal slide on clips! I love those...does McMaster carry that kit? Great job and be well! Thanks for checking out my j/d projects.
I know the rear of the deck is slightly bent. It's my snow machine and although it look's like a show piece, it's a worker. So I'm not concerned with it.
Tires were free that's why I used them,I agree... they are too big, but free is free.
yes, the "nutserts" or "rivit nuts" are available through McMaster Carr.

he kept coming over to the bench and saying "moma, you just gotta try a little harder"  it's alot harder than it looks.  Once I find my feet on hockey skates I'll do fine.  Taking lots of vit D and calcium until them.  The falls still hurt even with all that padding.
