These are Tawny Frogmouths. They are nocturnal in the wild and you hardly ever see them because they blend in so well. I've been surprised a couple of times in the bush because I've stopped walking right next to one, and then bang realised there was a bird there, when it just looks like a fence post! They call them Frogmouths because they have a huge mouth like a frog which they use to catch insects!
It's one of those electricity generating balls, you push a button and it generates a current surge through some gas which gives off the great display. They had it in a totally dark room so you could keep all extraneous light out. I experimented with different apertures and shutter speeds but got the best shots letting the camera do the thinking on Auto.
Hi Peter!!! These dingoes look alot healthier (fuller coats) then the wild ones I saw on Frazier Island in Feb, 2004... Must be very well taken care of... Gary
Kookaburra's are cool!!! Remember the old song??? We sang in school as kids (well we did anyway) Kookaburra, Kookaburra in the ole gum treeeeeeee,,, Gary
Yeah we sang that song in Brisbane where I grew up too. I love Kookaburras. I love the way they laugh and seem to have so much fun. They can be quite tame and friendly as well.

Yes they do look like Eagles but they are definitely Black Breasted Buzzards. What I loved about Featherdale Wildlife Park is they have plaques on all the exhibits with the names of the birds, so I took a photo of the bird and the next photo of the plaque. Half the fun in taking photos of birds when I'm on the road is identifying them when I get home. My brother (who lives in Brisbane) is much better than me, so I email any tricky ones to him!
I don't know if this is part of a mating ritual but this male was violently tearing feathers out of the females neck, I felt like throwing a rock at him to get him to stop!
