Most of the racing is on dirt roads at high speed, with the very real prospect of rolling the cars. The windows are made of perspex to stop them breaking and injuring the driver or navigator. The perspex can't be wound up like normal windows, so they use these little ones to hand info to the race officlas at the checkpoints.
