This picture reminds me of the first time I met him. I was on a date at Texas Rock Gym. He was working and starting talking to me and my date and then ending up hanging out with us the rest of that evening. I ended up hanging out with Ray a ton after that. We lost touch when he went to school, but every time he came home we met up. An amazing person, so funny and goofy we were always laughing.
I could not even tell you how many days I would wait in the band hall so I could "bum" a ride home. Ray was nice enough drive myself and a handful of other kids home without ever asking for gas money.
If you look at the first flatbed there's a gunner standing up; now if you look at the second flatbed just to the right of that gunner is my head and then Ray's. I remember the guy standing there in the road taking this picture and I am positive that it's Ray and me in that picture...
It was great to have served with Ray and all the men on this flag. I honestly think he touched each and every one of us in a very special way. I still think of him each day and what he did for our country, and I hope noone ever forgets him and the kind of man he was!
I think about him all the time, but then, I'm his mother. There's just something about sunrises and sunsets that bring Ray Joseph to mind so vividly. He loved both so much. He was always looking up. Even now that he has to be gone from us for a time, the skies in the early morning and at dusk can sometimes be filled with color that just takes my breath away. I think of him smiling with me as we look at a blazing skies once more. His view now must surely be wonderous.
