I was a 2nd Lieutenant with the unit and was on my first day when the missile fire happened. Later, my platoon was the first one to send the Erector Launchers out of Heilbronn under the INF Treaty. The only reason that Mr Gorbachev disarmed and the Soviet Union fell was that NATO in general, and the United States specifically, bargained from a position of strength. Otherwise, a third world war would have been very likely in the 1980s.
I was stationed on the middle (green colored) building from 1968-69, with C Co. 26th Signal Bn. My Co. was CPT Fristoe and my Plt Ldr was Lt. Panther. I had a great time in this place.
I cant belive the chapel @ wharton Barracks is still standing, my husband and I got married there 42 years ago, we will be going to Heilbron Sept. 2008 to go back and re-live our past, we sure had a lot of fun when we lived in Heilbronn
This was what we called the Ready Building, before the new building was built in 1979. We had 55 gallon barrels of dirt stacked two high all around this building. The window on the right was the arms room. There is a reunion for MP's of the 3/71st ADA, Dallau scheduled for September 2008. Go to Yahoo.com and search "Groups" DallauMP.
My wife and I were stationed there fro 2/70 until 2/73. We lived right across the street from the main gate and our first son was baptized in the chapel on post. Our second son was baptized in the Abbey at Bad Wimpfen by Fr. Andreas, our BN Chaplain.
I was assigned to D 3/84, a Pershing Missile Battalion and my wife helped to run the day care center at Wharton Barracks.
Yes there was a phone booth at the corner, your directions are correct.. sure wish I could see more pics of wharton barracks and jfk village

I used to work in the building on the right when you first came in the gate, after the MP station, looks like it was torn down. I lived in the 1st building on the left when you walked in the gate... so sad its gone.
My Husband was stationed at Wharton barracks we lived on post, JFKennedy Village.Between 1969 to 1972. Those were some great yrs, Anyone who was station there at that time, I would love to hear from. After Germany we were sent to Ft Riley KS. If anyone has any pics of the housing area that they can share with me, I would love to see them. My youngest son was born in Stuttgart in 1970 Thanks and hope to hear from someone, Bill and Jeannie Stayton
Thank you for the pictures. I was one of the Chaplain's Assistants from Jan 68 to July 69 while with 83d Engr and 237th Combat Engrs. Met my wife there, she lived across street in housing. One of these days we'll get back there. Danke.
I remember the day that the accident at Redleg happened. I was in the commissary at Wharton Barracks and the 5:00 news came on. My husband, at that time, was a young LT working up at that site. I was terrified and was unable to get any information for hours and hours until a friend at the clinic told me that my husband wasn't one of the victims. Small consolation to a horrible situation. I was near that site many times walking my dog while my husband was on site. I remember, time after time, protesters at the site. A peaceful place containing a "peacemaker" that could destroy so many. I'm glad the missiles are gone.
