Was Engineer on a B24 Flew 24 mission and was shot down on my 25th mission over Italy on Dec 28, 1943. They said that b4tween 75 and 100. German fighters hit us. there was 19 B24's on the mission and only 2 made it back to base. thats how ruff a mission it was. B-24 was the best heavey bomber built during WWII
Looking north above Ecorse Road. Large building on the lower right was the Roller Rink on Parkwood (fire destroyed it recently). The streets along the bottom going north, from right to left, now are Ohio, Dakota, Oregon and Devonshire. First east/west street would now be Russell. Railroad tracks and then Michigan Ave run slightly diagonal from left to right across the middle of this photo.
Looking north from Michigan Ave and Spencer Lane. The former Garwood Industries, now Eby Brown, site fronts along the north side of Michigan Ave and Willow Run High School is now back along Holmes Road and Spencer Lane.
Dave got my nose, gotta be a Kalamajka. I was 101 Airborne in 1967-68. One of 50 or so that got our Wings in Nam. Part of NW PA group. Mean anything to you?
I always enjoyed both of these guys in the movies, and I've always wished that John Payne could have done more. I can remember as a little kid asking My Mom . . ."When's John Payne gonna be in another movie?" I think that Holden would have been a much better looking guy when he 'aged,' if he hadn't been so heavily into alcohol. Heck, he was only in his early 60's when he died, but he looked pretty "worn"!
I was at Fort Dix around August 1968 on my way to the 21st replacement station in Frankfurt Germany. I arived a day ealier than ordered, so for my punishment, I pulled KP and CQ, handing out those thin mattresses and sheets to the guys that come on time. But I felt such a feeling of dejavu, I sensed the history of these old wooden baracks. It helped me overcome the fear and home sickness I felt. As a note I'm proud to say that I was an 11bravo
Barracks life looked like this is training area three, Ft. Dix NJ in 1965, Charlie Company, third training, 2nd Battalion. Thanks for the memories Thanks for the men who went before us.
