This is a 1958 Scammell MDT with bodywork by Coopers, getting a bit picky, but when manufactured at scammells as Heavy haulage tractors, they weren't called "Highwayman". Anyway, this was new to pickfords manchester depot, original reg. no. was VXD543. After pickfords it was used for recovery at Laneside garage, Rawtenstall, Lancs. Then purchased for intended restoration by Tommy Bradley of Bolton, and bought off him by my brother, John Thompson. We restored it to be used as a generator unit for fairground work. unfortunately it had to be sold, and we drove it from Rochdale to Bideford for the new owner. If anyone knows where this old girl is now, I'd love to know.
Many thanks for the information, Barcley, you can be as picky as you like in the interests of accuracy! Do you think I may be right that the picture was taken at Corbridge? I can't, for the life of me, find the program.
It is very good of the Foden society and all members to remember Foden by the way of this special memorial,we all have our memories of the lorries, for me it was my dad driving S21 8w tipper 24 tonners through to the S39 30 tonners, learning to drive a Foden S39 30 tonner in 1977 and everything else that goes with it,any true Foden driver/enthusiast will know what i mean,i like most i have shed blood sweat and tears over the years,it was a way of life then, which is why like most i agree with the true statement Foden Forever!
Thanks Mick, some credit must also go to the the quarry, for the stone, the transport company, the owners of the land and quite a few more. I think most people will agree that it looks good and Foden was too important to be allowed to pass without some reminder for future generations. Foden Fan
Hi. I now own RFO 918 and was wondering if you have any information on this vehicle/photograph ie. where it was taken etc as I am trying to build some history for it - it isn't painted like that now. Also would it be possible to get hold of a digital copy of the image please. Thanks Very Much Mark
